Caring for the Most Critical Patients First

Here at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists, we are experiencing a high demand for emergency veterinary services. Therefore, we have implemented our new triage priority levels (below) to care for the most critically injured or ill pets first.

We continue to follow social distancing safety guidelines. Therefore, only hospital personnel and pet patients are allowed in the building.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a number of challenges for all of our families, both personally and professionally. Our first priority is to keep you, your family, and your pets safe until this public health concern is stabilized. We appreciate your support and cooperation during this challenging time. Pet parents, please continue to review our updated protocols below:

Emergency Visits

If your pet needs emergency care, please call us at 802-863-2387 when you arrive. We will direct you with next steps. All communication moving forward will be via telephone.

Specialty Appointments

As with our emergency care, all communication will be via phone. Pet owners are not allowed inside the hospital. Please call when you arrive for the scheduled appointment. A technician will come out to our front door to receive your pet. Administrative and financial information will be handled via telephone.

Limiting Exposure

For dogs, we will not use a pet owner’s leash or allow personal belongings. If a cat is brought back the outside of the carrier must be wiped down first, then the cat can be brought back in their carrier.


All visitation for hospitalized pets will be virtual until further notice. We will set up calls with you via FaceTime. Please understand that call length may need to be limited.


When it is time for your pet to be picked up for discharge from the hospital, please call us when you arrive. Payment will be collected over the phone. All discharges will be reviewed in detail by the ICU technician over the phone. Your pet and medications will be handed to the owner outside in front of the hospital. We welcome your call at 802-863-2387 with any further questions or concerns.

Medication Refills

Please call us at 802-863-2387 if you need a refill of a prescription for your pet. We will collect payment via a credit card over the phone and bring the medication out to your car.

Euthanasia/End of Life

Euthanasia will be done in our Garden Room. We are allowing a limited number of family members to enter the hospital through the Garden Room entrance. Other families will be permitted to visit virtually via a FaceTime call. All other aftercare issues will be discussed with you at the appropriate time.

Before allowing family members to enter the building, we will take your temperature and ask the following questions:

  • Have you experienced a fever, cough, or shortness of breath in the last 48 hours?
  • Have you traveled out of state in the past 14 days?
  • Have you tested positive for COVID-19?
  • Have you been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?

Precautions for Sick Humans

Rest assured that we have protocols in place to allow team members that feel ill to stay home and rest. We also ask that any pet owners that are ill to stay at home and have a healthy family member or friend bring an ill or injured animal to the hospital.
