Our History

All About BEVS

It started with a commitment to fill a need in our community. In late 1999, there was no after-hours emergency veterinary care available in the greater Burlington area. So a group of local veterinarians banded together to form Veterinary Emergency Services, (VES), a shared resource providing weekend coverage for about a dozen veterinary hospitals in the region.

The demand grew quickly. Soon, VES expanded to become the mainstay weekend emergency veterinary service not only for its founding members but also to more than 40 other practices in the area.

Within four years, the business outgrew the facility it was using. And the shared operational business model simply wasn’t sustainable since most of the veterinarians providing coverage were already running their own busy practices.

So Burlington Emergency Veterinary Services (BEVS) was established, moving into a new state-of-the-art animal hospital in July 2005. BEVS operated during the hours when local veterinarians typically were not available: weeknights from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., and weekends from 5:00 p.m. Friday until 8:00 a.m. Monday.

The evolution continued in 2007 when, in response to the community’s need for advanced veterinary specialty care, BEVS expanded its services to include surgery, internal medicine, oncology (cancer care), canine rehabilitation therapy and acupuncture from board-certified specialists during regular business hours. And the practice became Burlington Emergency and Veterinary Specialists—same acronym, but reflecting our more robust capabilities.

Today, BEVS is entering a new chapter in its evolution—again, in response to the growing demand for our services—with the construction of a new, bigger facility that’s slated to open in 2019.
