Veterinary Social Worker

Now Hiring a Veterinary Social Worker

BEVS is seeking a qualified and compassionate social worker to join our team! The Veterinary Social Worker will be responsible for providing emotional support, short-term interventions, and psychoeducational programs to both clients and staff. As an integral part of the hospital teams, the Veterinary Social Worker shall assess the needs of both clients and staff and design thoughtful social programs to address various human needs within the hospital environment.

Job Responsibilities

Please note, this list is not exhaustive:

Support for Animal Owners (clients):   

  • Providing crisis intervention during difficult situations
  • Offering support during diagnostic testing and treatment
  • Assisting in processing difficult decisions (quality of life assessments, treatment decisions) with owners
  • Being available and present before, during, and/or after euthanasia
  • Facilitating family discussions with children; communicate about the animal’s illness and possible death with children)
  • Offering or providing resources and referrals to support groups, community resources, etc.

Support for the Veterinary Health Care Team (all hospital employees): 

  • Providing debriefing after difficult situations/code situations
  • Offering crisis support and referral to ongoing counseling
  • Support veterinarians, technicians and client care in difficult situations with pet owners
  • Offering 1:1 support to process difficult emotions, manage burnout and handle compassion fatigue

Competencies

  • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LiCSW)
  • Familiar with animal laws within the state of Vermont
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and uphold the NASW Code of Ethics
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to build strong trusting relationships within the workplace
  • Able to quickly and accurately assess the needs in emergent situations and provide services within a fast-paced and highly emotional setting
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience designing and providing a high degree of successful social programs and interventions
  • Able to collaborate effectively with a variety of departments, staff, and clients
