Is Your Pet a Candidate?

Outpatient ultrasounds are available to stable pets with a referral from your primary care veterinarian. This service is best suited for pets who do not require sedation, tissue sampling, or emergency care due to trauma or illness. If your pet needs immediate medical attention, we recommend scheduling an evaluation through our emergency department or Internal Medicine team.

This non-invasive diagnostic tool is designed for stable canine and feline patients, allowing us to evaluate internal organs and identify potential issues like obstructions or tumors without the need for sedation or invasive procedures.

Scheduling Your Pet’s Ultrasound

Scheduling an outpatient ultrasound is simple:

  • Obtain a referral from your primary veterinarian.
  • Call our team at (802) 863-2387 to book an appointment.
  • Appointments are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at varying times.
Please note that outpatient ultrasound appointments do not include an Internal Medicine consultation. A detailed report will be sent to your primary care veterinarian within 24 hours after the procedure.

Preparing Your Pet for an Ultrasound

Proper preparation is essential for accurate imaging. To ensure optimal results:

  • Withhold food after midnight the night before the procedure. Fasting helps provide clearer images of the abdominal organs.
  • Water is permitted, but avoid feeding your pet.
  • If your pet has a medical condition that prevents fasting, notify our team in advance.
  • Consider administering prescribed anxiety medication for pets who may experience stress.

Ultrasound Procedure Details

Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time. A dedicated ultrasound technician will meet with you to collect a brief history of your pet and answer any questions you may have. Please note that your pet’s abdomen will be shaved to optimize imaging.

Once the procedure is complete (scans take around 30 minutes), your pet will be returned to you, and you can proceed to check out at the front desk. Your primary care veterinarian can expect a report of our veterinary internist’s findings within 24 hours of the exam. If you wish to arrange a consultation with our Internal Medicine team, please contact (802) 863-2387.
